If we did not list above , What Type of Event are you most
interested in ?

Answer for #7 (that list is fine) Order of Ranking A,D,B,C |
Adult Summer Camp |
Adult camps (like the Region 9 camps held in Poteau years ago) |
We need to break these down into different levels of riding: Beginner; Intermediate; Professional. It seems there is a lot of emphasis and pricing for professionals to come and teach. However, there are a lot of local professionals that could teach beginner and intermediate riders a lot and make it cheaper in price so that they can afford to attend. |
I would like to have something educational at each meeting for a short time....I don't know about "twist" in the saddles & other interesting things.... |
Formal Dressage Shows |
"L" judges training |
Would love to see a clinic devoted to useful exercises for the various problems that arise in training. Would also like to see the Instructor Certification series provided here. Could even be done in conjunction with other GMOS |
To Help adult beginners learn to show, equitation, horse training and show turnout. |
Group Lesson Clinics where different foundation problems are addressed. Maybe do 1/2 day clinics |
A several day Dressage Camp that is lesson focused. Like a retreat format. Riders would stay at the location (on site, not at hotels) with the other riders with evening seminars or reviews of their lessons, etc. |
Is there a clinician you would like to see come to Oklahoma?
Please identify and give reasons below
Lena Wednenmark Lisa Wilcox |
The clinicians that I ride with I am very happy with, however I would like to have Stephen Kweiswetter or David Wightman on a consistent basis |
Someone who is spectacularly talented yet has a very generous spirit |
like to see different clinicians - but always would audit first before choosing to ride. |
Charles DeKunffy, Arthur Kottas, Sylvia Loch, or Erik Herbermann - all classicists, more concerned with rider correctly communicating with the horse, less about the sport, more about the art Also, Walter Zettl or Ernst Hoyos, |
Jane Savoie does an excellent job of communicating in terms that the average person can understand. |
Jane Savoie Debbie Mcdonald Anky Van Grunsven |
Lena Wedenmark. I have ridden with a lot of clinicians, and IMO, she has is a wonderful teacher. She is able to break things down into parts that are easy to learn and apply in order to reach the whole. For example, you wouldn't ask a young gymnist to run down and do a backflip before teaching her the parts, yet we do that with riders. |
Scott Hassler or another certified Young Horse trainer (there are many of us who ride young horses and want to breed for the Young Horse trials); Jane Savoie (especially her focus on "riding with the mind"); the dream would be Klaus Balkenhol or Walter Zettl for their focus on the horse and the joy they seem to take in riding. |
J. Ashton Moore is one of the very best to teach biomechanics. He is also willing to come to Oklahom to teach this important subject. Many riders don't understand the subject, and as a result don't give their horses the correct training or learn to use their own bodies correctly. Greater knowledgable will afford ODS members more tools and produce a greater appreciation of what horses can (and cannot) do; in other words, understanding biomechanics enables riders to better utilize the training scale. |
Ida Anderson - She is very enthuiastic and open to giving a clinic in Oklahoma. She has studied with some classic dressage masters and would be able to pass that knowledge on to clinic participants. |
Klaus Balkenhol |
I would like to see Alex Wortmann again and any comparable dressage experts |
Klaus Blankenhous (and I probably spelled his name wrong), Dr Hillary Clayton, and Ingrid Klimke. Klaus because I've heard and read many, many good things about him and his training and how you would find no gimmicks in his barn. Dr. Clayton for all her wonderful research about horses (biomechanics), and Ingrid Klimke for her emphasis on cross training. |
I would like to see Debbie McDonald, Conrad Schumacher |
I do not know anybody but I would ride with any clinician who is coming to Oklahoma to give lessons. |
Max Gahwyler, Ida Anderson, Kathy Connelly, Ashton Moore |
Not sure although I imagine there are many out there. By the way, what exactly is an "L Program?" |
Walter Zettl, German trained classical dressage master Marina Genn, great clinician |
Last July, I went to Missouri for a 3-day advanced clinic with GaWaNi PonyBoy. I would love for him to come to Oklahoma and do some more round pen clinics. He was wonderful. We used my mustang gelding as the clinic horse and it was all very interesting and he's a very relaxed and patient teacher. |
Rene Albrecht. She taught a para-equestrian clinic in Texas in February 2007. The clinic was awesome. She is an extraordinary teacher. I would like to attend another clinic with her. |
Melanie Tenney- She is absolutely fantastic. I have ridden with her several times and her teaching is incredible. She is USDF certified and is ahead of the USDF certification program. She has tremendous energy in teaching. She is expensive, but WELL WORTH IT!!! |
Mette Rosencrantz, Jane Savoie |
Talented local trainers would be less expensive and would make it easier for a lot of students to attend. The "biggest names" aren't always the best at communicating ideas, etc. |
Any clinician with quality background and experience. |
Any good clinician is good as long as it does not become a private clinic. Clinicians for possibly each level should be brought in to appeal to everyone. |
I'm not an advanced enough rider to need to ride with a "big name". I would be more inclined to participate as a rider with any of our local instructors. I would be thrilled to attend one by Kyra Kirkland. |
Someone who is kind and knowledgeable. |
Lyndon Gray--I think she is a great teacher. |
"O" Level Judge. Axel Steiner did a super symposium commented on horse and rider her in Okla??2000? at various levels. Told the truth about riders(which wasnt so popular) |
Dr. Thomas Ritter |
Metta Rosenkrantz and last but actually the best, Ingrid Klimke |
Kathy Connelly would be great. She was used as the instructor for the National Level Instructor's Symposium for USDF. Great with exercises for problems. Debbie McDonald would be good for drawing large crowds for a demo. Lilo Fore would also be good for systematic training (former head of Instructor Certification) |
Jane Savoie, very positive and knowledgeable, likes to teach others. |
Im happy with the great riders we have here |
What “assets’ do you have to contribute to an Event?
To the Professionals….we especially need your
thoughts so the program we design can incorporate your needs, where and when
possible. Please indicate below ideas you have that would benefit your riders.
I have seen many riders get ready for clinics that do not know how to listen or be respectful to clnicians. Or they complain about what the clinician said to them after they are done riding and that negative feedback seems to stop us from having good clinicians because people do not want to be truthful with themselves but want to be told how great they are. I think we need to educate riders more on how to present themselves around clincians. |
I feel we need more educational events for our Junior riders. My junior riders don't have the ability to pay $100+ for clinics. We also have problems with events over hour away from OKC area. I think we could use students of the big name riders to keep cost down. How about a horse info day: how to lunge, breeding of Dressage horse, feeding, hoof care, trailer safety. Find vets, farriers and other professionals to help. |
A clinic that really focused on dressage equitation and how it affects the horse would also be wonderful for many of us! |
I would like to see more outreach to our youth through local 4-H clubs, pony club, etc. to encourage them to participate in dressage. |
Need more help with the male riders. |
I think it would be nice to have more Jr. rider clinics in the area so that young students of dressage can watch their peers ride and work with their horses. It will also keep their interests up and maybe encourage them to work a little more on their own between lessons. |
Utilize your local pro's to offer mini clinics. One day programs. Unfortuntely this might cause upsets as one pro might feel threatened by their students riding w/ another local pro. |
Additional Comments and Suggestions? PLEASE…
anything that occurs to you on the subject of dressage education that we have
not covered here….ADD! This will truly be your program
I would like to see our local trainers put on a show, perhaps a combination of local trainers and vets etc that ride teach a specific topic for a hour each. Our state wide Farms and Trainers have a large impact on ODS, this would benefit them as well as benefit the members of ODS. |
Would like education on the advanced beginner and intermediate riders. |
I would really like to see more things for the "average" riders. I enjoy the ODS sponsored Show Camp - although its format needs to change from year to year to keep people interested. It could get a much larger draw. I love the Shawnee expo center as a facility. It would be nice if that facility could be used for more clinics, events, shows, demonstrations, etc. |
I would like to see information on developing young horses or advancing horses through the levels. More then just basic riding. |
While I fully appreciate and understand the need and importance of the sport of dressage, my personal interests are much more geared towards riding as an art. I would like to see a little more emphasis on this than gearing most things towards competition riding. Shows should be occasional proving grounds that our training is correct. Correctly educating and improving riders today, (including myself); particularly with the increasing interest in dressage, is critical to this discipline. We must have a care, lest we go the way of AQHA shows and other equine venues where many of the horses are abused in order to satisfy an owner's ego. Any educational program the promotes the horse's well-being would be wonderful. |
I would like to see a camp organized around fitness. Addressing physical fitness of horse and rider and mental fitness of rider. I would be willing to work on the organization. |
Education is a wonderful thing. However, we need to maintain an awareness that many people ask for specific types of education, but don't support it when it is offered. Perhaps part of ODS education should include outreach to members to help them understand the importance of continued education. We should also include outreach to trainers, since many of them seem reluctant to support events or encourage their students to support them. |
I would be interested in riding on a quadrille team if anyone was interested in organizing one. I also enjoyed Melanie Melanchak's Trot to Tunes and would like to have her come back to Oklahoma |
We need professionals within OK to set-up clinics for beginner; advanced beginner; intermediate riders. Most clinics seem to be focused on the professional rider with big name trainers that the are too expensive for most participants. |
I am a District Commissioner of Council Oaks Pony Club. I wish ODS would try to include the pony clubs more, possible at a discounted rate or free membership like OKE does. |
Considering the responses so far I would like to suggest that the chapters 'organize' their Open riders into an annual program that offers local clinics for dressage beginners |
increase use of videos & dvds |
Would like to have trainers do clinics that are reasonably priced for advanced beginner and intermediate level riders. |
We need to define what levels would be most participated in, know who the membership is.. and perhaps have lower level, upper level clinics or mixed clinics depending on the Clinicians and the membership level or interest Thank you very much for this survey! |
I do not have enough experience to know the right answers, but I want to learn and become the best rider I can. I know our leadership is a quality of knowledge and experience and will not forget the beginners!! |
I'm a junior rider and I'd like to see more clinics geared towards juniors, or possibly maybe some fun ride nights with games. I also have 4 horses, 3 of which are young and green. If there were more clinics and programs that involved how to correctly work with your green horse on dressage, I would definitely attend. |
I would like to see more juniors. As kids grow up, most are lost to the sport. I would like the club to sponsor costs for low level kids as well as the junior young riders |
I think the heart of keeping any dressage club or society active is offering a variety of learning workshops and bringing in clinicians in that are known and well respected. One can learn a lot from auditing if not able to ride or personally participate. Programs for the younger riders is very impotant. It was discussed at the last clinic I attended and many others too that the younger kids are (generally speaking) not as disciplined in their riding, or training. They are so busy doing other things and their riding is not taken as seriously as needed to see progress. Kids today seem to need to be entertained more that us older folks, so it is a bit of a challange to keep them interested in dressage, especially after the age of 15! It has to be fun and exciting for many of them to stick with it. So having said that, maybe the society can think of some fun ways to keep the younger generation going with this discipline of riding. |
try to make the events fun and informative. |
Try local trainers for clinics. Also, many of the younger vets have lots of new ideas on feeding, care, etc. which many of the members would benefit from knowing. |
To encourage people to come and watch have a program which involves ODS points for each educational clinic observed. Points lead to medal or prize. |
Riding and Training question. For me it is impossible for me to choose one over the other. Even when I am focused only on the training , the quality of my riding always plays an integral part of training success. |
I think we should recognize that frequently the cost of a clinic isn't just the price of the clinician, but also the facility. The rider costs would also include stabling and hotels. Although facility is usually reflected in the cost for the rides with the instructor, the other expenses are separate. |
Whats the difference between a judging clinic and L program. Riding and Training questions:I don’t understand the difference. I enjoy riding my horse and improving my riding. I gain satisfaction out of improving my horse’s performance and fitness. Prior to purchase of my new horse, I also worked on training the horse to a higher level. My new horse is already trained to a higher level than I ride. Back to my original question, how can you train your horse without riding it? |
When I took up dressage, I understood that each local chapter and the national level is about education, yet I find education very lacking. A state clinic one a year is woefully inadequate. More education could be done at the local chapter level. It seems to me that a beginner adult has a difficult time grasping dressage, and there is not much to turn to for guidance. |
Junior Camps or Shows??? I have a dressage team(non profit) that would love to participate in inexpensive camps or shows. Would be willing to help coordinate it. |
